In the poorest parts of Africa, one in five children dies before their 5th birthday.

We aim to offer real solutions by funding community based projects that address children's basic needs, from clean water and health to education.

Our approach means communities are actively involved in these projects, ensuring solutions are practical, relevant and long lasting.

It is just over two years since the STAR4Africa charity was formed.  It has been an exciting period during which we have commenced many interesting projects and have teamed up with several organisations to enable vital education based work in Africa to be carried out. STAR4Africa is in a fairly unique position where none of our funding goes towards staff salaries. Donations go directly to those people a specific project or organisation has been set up to help.

In Ghana we have partnered The Assin Endwa Trust and have provided nine scholarships to date. These scholarships pay for school fees, uniforms and food for children who otherwise simply wouldn’t receive a formal education. In addition we have provided the Trust with funds for their water project which aims to bring fresh water to within 100 metres of homes in Endwa.

In Sierra Leone STAR4Africa has started a joint venture with The Global Rescue Mission Sierra Leone (GM-SL) to bring about a children’s refuge. The refuge works with children who have become displaced following the war in their country. We offer a safe place to stay as well as teaching arts and crafts and some basic engineering. There is also a football tournament organised for these football mad kids.

We have also provided funds to Maria Chege who has built a school in Kenya using volunteers and using her own money and donations. In Namibia we have sponsored a six form college student from Surrey to spend a year volunteering in schools teaching English.

In 2009 STAR4Africa has helped fund the construction of teachers' houses at a school built in Mbelekete, Malawi.  A key barrier to providing quality education in rural areas is attracting qualified teachers who study in the cities.  The completion of teachers' houses will allow teachers to move to the area and provide the best quality education to students living in the area.  This is a key component of the Malawi government's commitment to the Millennium Development Goals, providing a school place to every child in the country up to the age of 11.

Another recent development has been the launch of a new auction website called www.AUCTION4Africa.com . The sole purpose of this website is to help raise additional funding for the charity.  STAR4Africa has also partnered with The Banks and Golf Championship to generate extra funding via live auctions and raffles.

How you can help support us!

There are many exciting plans going forward to expand the activities of STAR4Africa and we would really appreciate any support you may be able to provide us in the form of monetary donations, signed memorabilia (footballs / books / shirts / framed pictures!) or money can’t buy experiences which we can place on the AUCTION4Africa site with all the proceeds going directly to the charity.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has supported us during our first 2 years.

Many Thanks
